Question 4 my part answered on the teaser trailer

Evaluation 3 What have you learnt from your audience feedback? (teaser trailer)

How effective is the combination of your main products and ancillary texts?

Furthermore with the costume in all 3 media products, the protagonist is wearing the crucifix chain which helps the 3 media products link together. In addition the crucifix represents religion and religion is part of the binary opposition which is science vs religion and because the binary opposition is easily recognizable, the chain will help the audience recognize the film from just chain because they are all in the three media products, and it's represents religion which is part of the binary opposition.

The teaser trailer's scenes were dark which creates a link between the magazine and film poster because the magazine front cover and the film poster has a dark background due to the use of the color black and dark grey which creates a link due to the use of the colours.

Furthermore making the font the same as well as using the same costume for all three media products and the same dark colors in all three media products makes sense because of the fact that a cultural capital in psychological thriller will know that psychological thriller movies in their media products use the same font such as Red Dragon. Red Dragon used the same font in both their trailer and the poster which also influenced my group and I do this for our media products. It also helps the audience understand that these media products are linked together and part of the promotional film packaging. If we didn't then it wouldn't make our promotional film packaging look professional due to the different fonts being used and having no sort of linkage between the media products which is why it's essential to use the font and other features to link all the media products so the audience can know that they are all part of the promotional film packaging.

The costume was the same in all three media products which creates a link between the media products and showing the audience that they are part of the same promotional film packaging. In addition it would make sense to make the model have the same costume in all three media products because people could just use the costume to identify the film.

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Question4: How did you use new media technologies in the construction, research & planning and evaluation stages?

Question 3: What Have You Learned From Your Audience Feedback?

Poster

We showed a draft of our poster to a focus group raging of 10-12, 17+yrs. There were a mixture of psychological thriller fanatics and those who were more for the mainstream content such as super hero action film, which we believed will give us the best feedback as to what conventions will appeal more to a fanatic audience and what could those who are more about the flashy suits can comment on how our dark themed poster can reach out and attract them.

The feedback we received were about how we can change the font of the masthead. An interesting topic someone suggested was the photo used, we told everyone it was a place holder and they said it was a good photo. They liked the use of the crucifix being highlighted which was a prop we never meant to even bring in and said we should get a more interesting pose for our protagonist to draw them in more. We took on this feedback and applied it towards our new draft.

As you can see we applied some effects to make it more interesting for our audience such as adding the main focus of our project the tattoo. Also from the feedback we got there were comments of our model having a glow outline which was contrasting the dark background, I made changes and is now fixed.

Trailer

We went out to our target audience to get feedback on what their opinion are on the film. We also did this for the poster which proved to be helpful for us in our development and continued to help it in our trailer. As said from the feedback we re-recorded some scenes that were really bad such as the bathroom scene and some of the torture scenes.

As you can see here on the left is the previous shots from the trailer and the new ones we took are on the right which are at a better quality and the focus is not too off. You can also see the brightness is better for viewing as well.

My magazine Development Draft#1

This is only a draft of the independent magazine I am producing. This was my contribution towards the group and to show other ideas how to utilise an independent magazine.
In this draft I need to fix my bar code and change a few sell-lines. The main problem I have here is my text being hard to read from the background meaning I may have to change the photo, crop it or as seen to other independent magazines I will blur the background which could male reading easier.

Final Poster Notes

After looking at more psychological thriller posters as I felt that I was shifting away from our genre I realised that most posters seem to have there masthead placed in the middle and When I try that our poster seems bland at the top area. I'll place the slogan there, however it would just look weird and misplaced. This is why I created a puppeteer at the top to create something more interesting and to fill in the blank face. The hands were a separate image and I had to find a suit that I can lower the opacity to fit in the background and create mystery to whose controlling the strings. This gave me an easy option to place the slogan beneath the masthead and gave it a red colour to draw more attention.
The star names are better to read and I like the use of the white and red.

Trailer Updates

This is two versions with two different video effects on the tattoo scene. Im going to ask my target audience which version they prefer.

Magazine and Trailer

To match our house style the font used in the trailer and the font used on the magazine are now matches. By doing this is makes the audience identity the brand more easily it brings the magazine and trailer together. The font is bold and son serif  it has cracks in the middle which connotes that the main protagonist in broken and it also symbolizes the narrative that it isn't linear.

Updated Trailer Pieces

This is the new voice over used in our trailer. We thought by having this voice over it would made
the narrative more clearer for the audience and plants the idea of an revenge narrative for the future.

I        I added a red tint to the film in all of the torture scenes. I did this to make it more clearer to the audience that this is a flashback and this happened in the past.

I also added a two shot which gives variety in the camera shots in the trailer its more interesting for the audience to watch and it also shows the importance of the tattoo because this is the only shot that shows home touching it twice.

Final Magazine

Feedback on Magazine From Audience

My target audience have been leaving comments on these platforms and been giving me suggestions on how to improve the magazine.  These are a few of the comments.

-Picture is stretched make him a bit bigger in the frame

- Make the text bigger

- The white border is difficult to see

-Put a  black border around the edges then the thicker white one inside

-Allumer les Lumieres the style of presentation is really nice.

- The image is too long

-The font choice could be improved

- Make the font stand out more.

Comparing to Existing Mainstream magazines

When making our magazine we realized that it was becoming to mainstream and not independent enough. We started copying the conventions of an Mainstream magazine rather than following the conventions of an independent one.  Especially because our target audience are in the socio– economic group of B to E and some are individualist and would enjoy this film and an non – mainstream magazine to match.

So I plan to take out certain sell lines and the conventions and replacing them with smaller fonts and choosing another back drop. It would look more pleasing and unique.

Poster Feedback

Trailer Feedback

I've asked someone in our target audience their opinion of the film to get their feedback and see what improvements we could apply to our film.

Magazine front cover drafts

Through this last couple of drafts I decided to change the sell lines fonts because many of my feedback from the target audience didn't like the way they were presented from the previous font so I used the a serif font called timeless body which looked better and had a stronger bold appearance. I changed the background from black to the image before. I made the date and issue convention smaller due to the fact that every magazine front cover has there date and issue number is a small text.

Modified sell lines and changed quote (Magazine draft)

Magazine front cover summary

First I decided to change the whole house style of the magazine because of the fact that it will still enforcing a mainstream magazine appearance so I removed the background and made the background predominately white then added a small black box within the middle and placed the model in the box. I made the sell lines small because on other independent magazines the font size is small and not big. Furthermore the reason why I changed the background to white because the masthead wasn't that visible for the audience to read so I changed the background. In addition all my fonts are using serif fonts because independent magazines use seri fonts and my magazine is an independent magazine.
In addition I kept the colour black and white as the colour scheme so that it can have a cross link with the film poster.
This magazine at the bottom influenced me with the house style but I didn't copy, I changed the the bar code position, the background image and colour, I placed the sell lines at the bottom. I've placed a slogan underneath the masthead because every independent magazine has a slogan  so it made sense to have one.

Modifications to the sell lines (magazine draft)

Change of house style (Magazine drafts)

The layout of the house style changed for example the background, the sell lines, date and a quote was added so it can have conform more with the hegemonic ideology of an independent magazine front cover.

Lastest Movie Update

Poster draft #2

This is a crop image of a better quality photo. After some feedback about the image being of a low quality we looked for a better image to replace the current one. This is an low angle to give a more dominant look towards the audience also looking into the camera to draw the audiences attention.

Heres the image in its magazine background. Its coming together and just needs more conventions for a magazine to be on it to look more appropriate and professional. From a quick talk with the group I was told to include a better masthead font and include some reviews which i'll include in the next upload/edit.

Film Trailer ideas

This was only a rough edit but I wanted to give an idea of what the trailer could potentially look like. This was to give ideas to the group and experiment with the clips we got with the new title. I more like to think of this as an animated storyboard to just give an idea towards how the main edit can envelope some of the ideas used in this.

Credits added (Film poster draft)

Summary of the last magazine front cover draft

I tried to challenge the hegemony of a independent magazine with a puff but my group and I decided to take it out so it can conform more to an independent magazine house style and have the conventions of a independent magazine. I turn the phrase 'allumer les' white so it can be more visible for the audience to see. I added the date and the issue number.

(Added date, removed puff & issue number) Magazine draft

Magazine edit summary

From the last magazine edit, I changed the fonts on the front cover to serif fonts because the conventions of the independent magazine used serif fonts so I changed the fonts to serif which is the masthead and sell lines.

The feedback I received wanted me to brightened up the background so I changed the contrast and the background to brighten up the background which made it eligible for the consumer to read the fonts and the masthead easily. Furthermore the feedback I received wanted me to make the masthead visible and me hanging the font as well as the brightness of the background helped that happened.

Crystal peak feedback summary

From the feedback I got from my media classroom we need:
To establish the villain more so the narrative of the trailer can make sense so the scenes that were in the draft before the last one needs to be added back in which is the old white ethnic background man on the newspaper where our protagonist is looking at. At the moment they just see a person being kidnapped in the past and in the current present situations they just a man running around. So we need to establish the villain more which on the newspaper so the narrative we want them to know and see becomes more clearer.

Furthermore they saw the teaser trailer's pace being to fast we need to slow down the pace in order for the audience to understand what's going on and to feel the atmosphere of the teaser trailer. In addition at the end of the bathroom scene where the protagonist hits the glass, they said that the sound of glass shattering doesn't sync in well with the punch and the glass shattering sound is obvious that it's a non digetic sound. One individual thought that scene was ending randomly, it was going to fast and it didn't really go well with the teaser trailer.

This is the scene that needs to be added back in and established more to make the narrative of the teaser trailer clearer.

Poster Draft #3

In this draft I have incorporated the credits at the bottom and included the font followed our house style for the masthead. The reason why i took out the other names and only included one which is our protagonist is because he is our star and seen from other references of film poster they can have have one star name and highlight it. This makes our poster stand out more and if our actor was really famous for instance can draw his fanbase more towards our film.
One example is:
http://movieposters2.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/Maleficent_movie_poster.jpg

What I still want to do is change our main photo of our protagonist, it doesn't really draw me into the poster and maybe change the background as well. This was also small feedback I got from a few people i showed it towards and I agree.
The date is in red to make it stand out from the credits, however is not final in decision. The font may also change in the credits to a more appropriate credits font.

Magazine feed back

The media students told me to:
  • Add a white boarder on the magazine front cover
  • Make Joseph bigger
  • Add film titles, independent films and foreign film titles
  • Puff - Win tickets to camera film festival
  • Barcode + Font
  • Serif font
  • Slogan
  • Background lighter
  • They thought the magazine drafts had to much of a mainstream appearance so therefore they told me how to make it less mainstream and adopt a more independent magazine appearance.

Titles

Here is the title for Crystal Peak. I created this in Adobe After Effects and took approximately 2hrs to complete. I picked the stars for the background to establish the name "crystal".
This is a work in progress and will be a place format till a remastered version is created.

Tuesday 24 March 2015

Draft 6 Poster

In my movie we play with the colour palette we used saturate colours for example: red, yellow etc.  So I thought I would be a good idea to apply some of that to the post so I made the image slightly  smaller and applied the gradient tool to make the image red. Because I made the image smaller I could also have space to rearrange the names of the actors inside the film. I also got rid of the ‘SUMMER 2016’ and replaced that with a coming soon which I placed at the bottom of the poster. The COMING SOON is in the same font (crackvectia)  as the title to create synergy.

Trailer note #2

These are the screenshots we took from our bathroom scene that we filmed the other day. This took awhile to find the right type of area we were looking for but this fit our expectation the most from the other places we looked at. After looking back on these shots they were (like the bedroom scene) dark in lighting in most areas and we didn't get the right type of shots we wanted either. Were thinking of keeping some shots from this shoot but were defiantly going to have to arrange another shoot with this scene.

Trailer Draft 5

This is the new edit with the added bathroom scenes to create a montage of scenes at the end.

Final Film Title

This will be the final edit for for film title and took around 3hrs to produce on after effects. With the help of a video tutorial from Video Copilot it was not too hard to produce and I only stumbled onto small minor errors.
The reason why I choose this type of effects was that my group was working around the Cracktivia font and I thought this will fit perfectly within the house style. I spoke to my group about it and they all agreed that this was a huge improvement and fells this will fit perfectly within our film trailer.

Friday 20 March 2015

Draft 5 Poster

I also added stills at the bottom of the poster show that the poster could be connected to the trailer and so that the audience could have an idea of what is to come in the film.

At first I thought that this would be my final poster. However, I conducted some audience feedback and they then told me that I could still add some more features and to improve and make my poster.

Thursday 19 March 2015

Draft #2 Coming Soon

This was a request from Danielle of what she wanted for the coming soon title since the other one I made did not fit in the style of what we wanted. She asked for a quick 2 second coming soon title that just appears then vanish's quickly.

Wednesday 18 March 2015

Bathroom scene only

We had to replace the bathroom scene with new shots because our feed back showed that people didn't enjoy the way the bathroom scene was presented. So we had to re shoot the scene. I made the bathroom seem separately so I can formulate this part of the teaser trailer.
The blank gaps in this scene will have scenes added to them which was not filmed in the bathroom

Problem with the sound

Thursday 12 March 2015

Sounds Development

During the trailer you hear a various amounts of sounds being used for example:
Glass Shattering, Drills most importantly you hear a constant ticking through out giving
the impression that time is running out for our protagonist. During our new action scene the music
heightens and goes to quite fast paced with a higher pitch which builds tension and it ends rapidly
with the title of our film.

Some of the sound research websites.

-Sound Cloud
- Magic Music Maker

Trailer Draft 4

This trailer edit the first with the added new scenes. The old ones where too dark and confused the audience with the narrative to come. The bedroom scenes looked unprofessional and didn't suit our house style for the trailer, however, with these new added scenes is pushed are narrative further. It looked more professional.

Film poster (Added image)

Draft 4 Poster

I added another convention by adding a text box at the bottom which states things like the production team, Imax, the director etc. By adding this it makes it more realistic and professional, because all posters have that at the bottom of their posters.

Wednesday 4 March 2015

Narrative and Structure Changes

We saw that our narrative didn't make sense with the selection of shots we had
so we deiced to add a few more scenes to continue on the story. For example:
We added a action scene to make the trailer more excited and giving the audience a
illusion of a fight scene to come and also instead of a bedroom scene in the beginning
we have a church scene we he start to get flashbacks of what happened to him in past.

I think these added scenes will be good and forward our story making the audience wanting to see more.

Tuesday 3 March 2015

Final Magazine

Draft 3 Poster

I added a slogan to the poster 'Life is not a choice'  so the audience gets a hint of what the movie could be about. I also added a 'Coming Soon - Summer 2016' so you could know when it's coming out, which is a typical convention of movie posters.

Church scenes replace bedroom scenes (Teaser trailer edit)

Summary
Within the crystal peak edit I changed the introduction with a cinematography shot which is an eye line match at the start with our protagonist looking at the the crucifix, My audience feedback told me that the introduction dragged on to much so I shortened it and used the their feedback. Furthermore I took a scene where the camera did a pan shot on the saw, I took it out because it had a negative effect on the flow of the trailer.
